There are many different kinds of shopping cart programs to choose for a business. Some are commercially licensed and these generally require a monthly fee, or a one time payment to use that particular shopping cart. Just because a shopping cart program is purchased from a commercial company does not mean that there can be no modification to the product. Sometimes a commercial product will include the shopping cart source code for minor modifications for the system. This is done so that the program can work with many different types of businesses.
Some commercial shopping carts do not include source code at all. This means that you will have to use the program as-is, and no changes can be made by you at all. This is fine if a basic system is all that is needed. However, if any customization at all is required, then it is important to obtain a shopping cart program that offers the customization ability.
Another kind of open-source shopping cart program is the kind of programs that are usually offered for free. These programs are used so that multiple users can modify and improve the program together to supposedly make the best program possible. Users are not able to modify the program and then sell the modified version. Any modifications to the program must be also given away for free to new users.
There are some clear advantages to using a completely open-sourced shopping cart program. For one thing it is possible to modify any part of the program that you want. This means that the customization options are endless. The ability to modify something so completely makes it unique to you and offers better service to customers. Another great thing about open source shopping carts is the fact that there are generally free to use. This means that you will save money that can be used for other purposes.
However, there are drawbacks to an open source program as well. If you make a great innovative modification, it is impossible to sell the program and bring in money from the work you did on it. It is also difficult to update the program without destroying all of the time spent making your own modifications to the system. Lastly, all the modifications do have to be made yourself. If you do not know how to make the changes or do not have someone to modify the program then an open source shopping cart system is wasted.
If you are perfectly fine with using a pre-made system that cannot be modified, then open source shopping carts are not for you. However, if you have the knowledge or someone working with you who has the knowledge to make the open-source program better then choosing a open-source shopping cart is a great idea. It really all comes down to whether you would rather spend the money to have someone else modify the program or spend the time to adjust the system yourself.
